HARDIN COUNTY, Texas — Authorities have confirmed that the shooting death of 44-year-old Freeman Oliver Jones outside of Silsbee on Monday is considered justified, according to Sheriff Mark Davis. No charges have been filed in connection with Jones’ death.

Sheriff Davis reported that Jones broke the front door of his parents’ home on Jones Lane around noon and threatened family members while demanding money. He briefly left the home but returned with a steel pipe jack handle, acting in an enraged and belligerent manner, with family members noting he may have been under the influence of drugs.
When Jones attempted to enter the home a second time, a family member fired a single shot from a shotgun to protect the residents. Jones was pronounced deceased at the scene, and an autopsy has been ordered by Justice of the Peace Chris Ingram.
Based on witness statements and a review of the evidence, Sheriff Davis stated that the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office believes the use of force was lawful and justified. The findings will be submitted to Hardin County District Attorney Rebecca Walton for formal review.
Sheriff Davis offered condolences, saying, “Our thoughts are with this family during this difficult time,” emphasizing the tragic nature of the incident and the importance of family safety.
