Rosemary Barber Mapleton, Iowa Accident: Rosemary Barber, 75, Fatally Injured in Ford Escape vs GMC Sierra Crash Near Mapleton

Rosemary Barber Mapleton, Iowa Accident – A fatal traffic collision claimed the life of Rosemary Barber, a 75-year-old Mapleton resident, on Christmas night, December 25, 2025, in rural Monona County. Initial confusion surrounding the incident suggested a motorcycle may have been involved; however, official law enforcement reports confirm that the crash involved an SUV and a pickup truck, not a motorcycle.

According to authorities, the collision occurred at approximately 7:40 to 7:41 p.m. at the intersection of 130th Street and Walnut Avenue, located about five miles east of Mapleton. The Iowa State Patrol reported that Barber was driving a 2013 Ford Escape SUV eastbound on 130th Street when the crash occurred.

Investigators determined that Barber attempted to make a U-turn on 130th Street in order to travel back westbound. During this maneuver, her SUV was struck on the driver’s side by a 2018 GMC Sierra pickup truck, which was also traveling eastbound. The impact was severe, causing extensive damage to the Ford Escape and resulting in life-threatening injuries to Barber.

Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene. Barber was transported to Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa, where she was treated for serious injuries. Despite medical efforts, she later succumbed to her injuries. Authorities confirmed her death later that evening.

The driver of the GMC Sierra was identified as 31-year-old Cody Clausen of Schleswig, Iowa. A passenger was also in the pickup truck at the time of the collision. Both Clausen and the passenger were evaluated at the scene and were not reported to have suffered significant injuries.

Officials cited dense fog and limited visibility as likely contributing factors in the crash. Christmas night weather conditions in the area reportedly reduced sight distance, making it difficult for drivers to see clearly. While no charges have been announced, the Iowa State Patrol indicated that environmental conditions played a role in the sequence of events.

The investigation was led by the Iowa State Patrol, with assistance from the Monona County Sheriff’s Office, Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, and the Mapleton Fire Department. Authorities continue to review evidence, including roadway conditions and vehicle positioning, to complete the official accident report.

The death of Rosemary Barber has brought sorrow to the Mapleton community, particularly during the holiday season. Local officials used the incident to remind motorists to exercise extreme caution during periods of poor visibility, especially on rural roads where lighting is limited and traffic patterns can change quickly.

No further details have been released at this time.
