HARDIN COUNTY, Texas — The Hardin County community is mourning the loss of Freeman Oliver Jones, 44, whose life ended tragically on Monday following a disturbance at his parents’ home outside of Silsbee.

According to the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around noon at a residence on Jones Lane. Authorities said Jones forced entry by breaking the front door, threatened family members, and demanded money. After briefly leaving the home, he returned carrying a steel pipe jack handle, continuing to behave in an aggressive and threatening manner.
When Jones attempted to enter the home again, a family member fired a single shotgun round to protect those inside. Jones was pronounced deceased at the scene, and Justice of the Peace Chris Ingram ordered an autopsy.
Sheriff Mark Davis stated that after reviewing evidence and witness statements, the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office determined the shooting to be a justified and lawful use of force. As standard procedure, the case will be forwarded to Hardin County District Attorney Rebecca Walton for formal review.
Freeman Oliver Jones’ passing has left loved ones grieving a painful and complex loss. In this time of sorrow, the community extends its deepest condolences to his family, remembering his life while acknowledging the tragic circumstances surrounding his death.
