In a statement issued on behalf of his wife and two children, a family spokesperson said, “It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Chris. He passed away peacefully in hospital earlier today following a short illness, surrounded by his family.”
Rea became synonymous with the Christmas season thanks to Driving Home for Christmas, first released in 1986. The song, inspired by Rea’s own experiences touring during the winter months, tells the story of a weary traveller making their way home for the holidays.
